Batman By Jeff Shannon
Thanks to the ambitious vision of director Tim
Burton, the blockbuster hit of 1989 delivers the goods despite an
occasionally spotty script, giving the caped crusader a thorough overhaul
in keeping with the crime fighter's evolution in DC Comics. Michael Keaton
strikes just the right mood as the brooding "Dark Knight" of
Gotham City; Kim Basinger plays Gotham's intrepid reporter Vicki Vale; and
Jack Nicholson goes wild as the maniacal and scene-stealing Joker, who
plots a takeover of the city with his lethal Smilex gas. Triumphant
Oscar-winning production design by the late Anton Furst turns Batman
into a visual feast, and Burton brilliantly establishes a darkly mythic
approach to Batman's legacy. Danny Elfman's now-classic score propels the
action with bold, muscular verve.
Academy Awards
Batman received an Academy Award
for Best Achievement in Art Direction (Anton Furst - Art Direction, Peter
Young - Set Decorator).

"This is one of my favorite movies because it came out the summer I was 12 and it has been apart of my life ever since. This was the first movie I saw more than twice at the movie theater. That was a big deal at 12. My brother and I tried to make our own cool gagets with limited outcome. We played Batman until the cows came home. Now back in the good old VHS days you had to wait a long time for good movies to come out on tape, but I remember getting this one like it was yesterday. It was christmas eve 90 or 91 and from my grand parents we got Batman on vhs we watched twice that night and about two times a day that whole christmas vacation. And since then my brother and I wathed it every christmas eve until I moved in 2000. I know its not a christmas movie by any means but it was a good way to eat up two hours of our time, and kill the christmas morning jitters. By the way I got Batman on DVD on christmas morning 2000 from you gussed it my brother." --Jerryrigger255 |
