Quotable!
"If you don't have outstanding relief pitching, you might as well piss on the fire and call in the dogs."

Golden Spikes Winners

By Patrick Mondout

USA Baseball has presented what it believes to be the top amateur baseball player in the country with the Golden Spikes Award since 1978. USA Baseball, which was founded in 1978, is the governing body for amateur baseball in the United States and is a member of the United States Olympic Committee. It is responsible for the U.S. Olympic baseball team.

USA Baseball announced their 25th Anniversary "Golden Spikes" team in 2002. It included outfielders Mark Kotsay, Terry Francona, and J.D. Drew, infielders Bob Horner, Pat Burrell, Will Clark, Phil Nevin and Robin Ventura, and pitchers Jim Abbott, Ben McDonald, and Mark Prior. Since no catcher has ever won the award, there were five infielders and no catchers on the team.

Wondering how any of these guys fared in the MLB draft? Click on the year in the table below to view the first round of that year's draft.

Share Your Memories!

Our sites have always been by you and about you. If you check our TV Forums or our Technology & Science forums, you'll find literally thousands of messages from fans of 1970s TV shows, survivors of hurricanes or aircraft accidents, etc. from all over the world sharing their memories, asking questions, making comments. Our baseball section is new, but don't let that stop you from sharing your memories of the first game you went to, your favorite player, a now-forgotten stadium, etc. Of course you can also ask questions, post trivia, tell the world what you think of Barry Bonds, or just read what others are saying.
