Silver Slugger Winners

Hillerich & Bradsby, the makers of the Louisville Slugger, have awarded a "Silver Slugger" to one player at each position in each league since 1980. The award is for offensive excellence, in contrast to the much older Gold Glove awards. Major League managers and coaches vote on the award, but cannot vote for their own players.

A silver bat had been awarded to the batting champion of each league as the "John A. Hillerich award" for some time. In fact, that award actually predates and was the inspiration for the Gold Glove. H&B stopped awarding such bats at the same time the new Silver Slugger awards were introduced in 1980. Only the top vote getter at each position in each league received such a bat from the company. The first "victim" of this new policy was Bill Buckner, who won the NL batting title but lost out to Keith Hernandez at first base for the Silver Slugger. With silver at over $50 an ounce in 1980, he must have been terribly disappointed.
