MLB Revenues and Expenses

By Patrick Mondout

Our yearly pages for each franchise (example) contain revenue, income, and operating income (profit/loss) estimates. You should use these for entertainment purposes only as they are only yearly guesses made mostly by Forbes magazine. It is understood that they do not include all sources of income for Major League teams and MLB steadfastly refuses to fully disclose financial information to disprove the notion that every team has been profitable in real terms every season for over 20 years. And as the value of said franchises has tripled in the past few decades, it is clear that there is more to running a team than TV contracts and tickets; these figures almost certainly underestimate the actual revenues of every team. So long as Congress only uses the threat of taking away the antitrust exception to extort political donations and communities willingly hand over billions of middle-class taxdollars to build new stadiums for these billionaires without asking for such information, why should they provide it?

Some Random Notes About the Figures

MLB, ABC and NBC signed a four year deal that amounted to a joint partnership to televise games from 1994-1997 with revenue sharing. This deal was a great one - for ABC and NBC. MLB suffered greatly when they forced their players into a strike and then cancelled the World Series in 1994. MLB finally recognized their error and refused to renew the deal after the 1995. Actual revenues from this deal have been had to come by from an understandably embarrassed MLB, but the following estimates are assumed: 1994 60,000,000; 1995: 120,000,000.

The New York Yankees paid a reported $25M revenue-sharing "tax" during the 2005 season and the Pittsburgh Pirates received a $13.3M revenue sharing check in 2004. (Small market teams screamed for revenue sharing saying they could not compete for free agents without it, but the system does not require them to actually spend the money on free agents and some owners seem content to just pocket the check. For the record, the Pirates 2004 check was nearly double their 2003 revenue sharing figure, and their payroll went up by almost exactly the additional amount. The San Antonio Marlins are the worst offenders this season.)

The year 2006 should be a great one for MLB owners. Each team will receive a share of the proceeds of the sale of the Washington franchise (which MLB has owned since 2002) to whichever group of billionaires steps forward with the highest bid. Here's hoping D.C. residents, who agreed to spend their hard-earned taxdollars on a stadium to make the team more attractive to new owners, enjoyed lining the pockets of all the Major League owners.

Much of the work of compiling this information was by Rodney Fort, who has an excellent site full of such data.

Share Your Memories!

Our sites have always been by you and about you. If you check our TV Forums or our Technology & Science forums, you'll find literally thousands of messages from fans of 1970s TV shows, survivors of hurricanes or aircraft accidents, etc. from all over the world sharing their memories, asking questions, making comments. Our baseball section is new, but don't let that stop you from sharing your memories of the first game you went to, your favorite player, a now-forgotten stadium, etc. Of course you can also ask questions, post trivia, tell the world what you think of Barry Bonds, or just read what others are saying.
