1957 Gold Gloves
Below are the winners of the 1957 Gold
Glove awards. The award is given annually by Rawlings, makers of
baseball gloves, to the best defensive player at each position in each
league. Since 1965 managers and coaches have voted for the winners, though
they cannot vote for players on their own team.
In this first year of the award, there were not separate awards for
each league; the "best" fielders from all of major league
baseball were put on a single all-star fielding team. Perhaps not
surprisingly, Willie Mays was the only unanimous choice. Even then his
fielding exploits were legendary.
Rawlings also had a contest in 1957 for kids to select who they thought
would win. The kids choices that differed were Stan Musial at 1B, Don Hoak
at 3B, Charlie Maxwell in LF, and Yogi Berra behind the plate. Four
guessed eight of the nine correctly and Ronald Quintelier was judged the
winner.
Read more about the award, including a complete list of winners, here.
Notes: Three outfielders were chosen
regardless of position (LF, CF, RF) starting in 1961. Such players are therefore
shown above in random outfield positions and not necessarily where they played.
National League players are in yellow while American Leaguers are in white.

|
Our sites have always been by you and about you. If
you check
our TV Forums or our Technology & Science forums, you'll find literally thousands of messages from fans
of 1970s TV shows, survivors of hurricanes or aircraft accidents, etc. from all over the world sharing their memories, asking
questions, making comments. Our baseball section is new, but don't let
that stop you from sharing
your memories of the first game you went to, your favorite player, a
now-forgotten stadium, etc. Of course you can also ask questions, post
trivia, tell the world what you think of Barry Bonds, or just read what
others are saying.
