2003 Major League Draft
Here is the first round of the 2003 Major League Baseball draft. Southern
Californian high school outfielder Delmon Young was the number one overall
pick going to the Devil Rays. Young the younger brother of Dmitri Young,
who had held the honor of being the highest drafted member of his family
when he went fourth overall to the Cardinals
in 1991. This marked the second time in the short history of
the Devil Rays that they used the top pick on a high school outfielder,
having selected Josh Hamilton #1 overall in 1999.
Number 2 overall pick Rickie Weeks went undrafted out of of high school
but gained the scouts attention as a second baseman at Southern
University. Weeks became the highest drafted player from Southern since Danny
Goodwin went #1 overall to the Angels in 1975. Wake Forest
righthander Kyle Sleeth, who tied an NCAA record with 26 consecutive
victories, went #3 to the Tigers. Until this past season, Sleeth was seen
as a better NFL prospect. Both Tony Gwynn and Fernando
Valenzuela, who saw plenty of each other in the NL West (including a short
time as teammates), had their sons taken in the draft. Anthony Gwynn, who
hit .359 for San Diego State, went #39 overall to the Milwaukee Brewers.
Fernando Valenzuela, Jr. was drafted in the 10th round by the Padres. Other
"sons" who were drafted include: USC righthander Brian Bannister
(Floyd Bannister, who was the first overall
pick in 1976) who was taken in the 7th round by the Mets, Oklahoma
State outfielder Jose Virgil (Ozzie Virgil) who was taken in the 18th
round by the Cardinals, North Carolina State outfielder Joe Gaetti (Gary
Gaetti) taken by Colorado in the 12th, and Rice shortstop Enrique Cruz
(Jose Cruz and brother of Jose Cruz, Jr.) selected by the Yankees in the
14th round.

Share Your Memories!

|
Our sites have always been by you and about you. If
you check
our TV Forums or our Technology & Science forums, you'll find literally thousands of messages from fans
of 1970s TV shows, survivors of hurricanes or aircraft accidents, etc. from all over the world sharing their memories, asking
questions, making comments. Our baseball section is new, but don't let
that stop you from sharing
your memories of the first game you went to, your favorite player, a
now-forgotten stadium, etc. Of course you can also ask questions, post
trivia, tell the world what you think of Barry Bonds, or just read what
others are saying.
