"The French Connection II should have given Gene Hackman a second Academy Award! The last 10-15 minutes were Award-winning! [Editor's note: I think it's the other 75 minutes the Academy had trouble with. ;) ]" --barb | "In 1971 all the cop Movie rules were bent with The French Connection. The film felt like a documentary, following a New York City cop around and , wow, a career defining case is unfolding before our eyes. 4 years later. . Gene Hackman returns in His Oscar winning role as Popeye Doyle. . and a lot has changed in cop Movies. Everything that made the original unique is thrown out in the interest of playing it safe. Hey. . it's The FRENCH Connection lets send Popeye to France!!!!#2 plays like a standard, by the numbers, cop Film. Not only that. it plays like a TV Movie version of Popeye Doyle. Without Hackman there is no French Connection. This is a good Gene Hackman cop Movie but as a French Connection follow-up . . it traded unique for standard." --Michael C. |
