18 Year Olds Given the Right to VoteBy Patrick Mondout
The Twenty-sixth Amendment was proposed by Congress on March 23, 1971,
upon passage by the House of Representatives, the Senate having previously
passed an identical resolution on March 10, 1971. Ratification was
completed on July 1, 1971, when action by the legislature of the 38th
State, North Carolina, was concluded, and the Administrator of the General
Services Administration officially certified it to have been duly ratified
on July 5, 1971. This amendment allowed extended the right to vote to
18-year-olds. In recent years, many in the U.S. had complained that
18-year-olds could be drafted into the military and sent off to die for
their country but they were not allowed to vote for the politicians who
might send them there. President Nixon certified the amendment in a
signing ceremony at the White House on July 5th.
Text of the Amendment
Section 1. The right of citizens of the United
States, who are 18 years of age or older, to vote, shall not be denied or

Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to
enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
