1977 Topps Cloth StickersBy Patrick Mondout
Topps had produced in-house cloth stickers in 1970, 1972, and
1976 and possibly other years. They finally produced and distributed a set
of cloth baseball stickers for the 1977 season. The 55 sticker (73 if you
include the unnumbered puzzle pieces) set was released in late summer in
15¢ wax packs containing two stickers, one puzzle piece and a slab of
gum. It was hoped the baseball card-sized stickers would appeal to kids,
but this test issue must not have sold well as Topps abandoned the
concept.
The fronts of the stickers feature the same graphics and photo as the
player's '77 Topps card. The backs were white with
blue printing and featured career highlights and illustrated instructions
on how to relieve the sticker of its value (by peeling the sticker off and
placing it on something).
The puzzle pieces made up pictures of the 1976 NL and AL All-Star
teams. The "backs" of the puzzle pieces had a checklist for the
set.
I first discovered these cards at a local card shop in 1981. I bought a
pack and noticed that even with brand new untouched stickers, pieces of
the cloth came off quite easily with handling. The stickers also looked a
little dull compared to their '77 Topps cards and the backs did not have
statistics. All of this kept me from buying another pack though I will
always think of this unique set as pretty cool.
