Funny FaceBy Mitchell1660
Funny Face was Sandy Duncan's first TV series and it was touted
as the hot new sitcom of the 1971-72 season. It had a plumb spot,
"hammocked" between All In The
Family and The Mary Tyler Moore
Show and premiered in the top ten.
Unfortunately, production had to be shut down because Sandy Duncan
developed cancer in her optic nerve and had to drop out of the series for
an operation, which left her blind in one eye. After a full and healthy
recovery, CBS wanted the promising Sandy Duncan back on the network, but
the "higher ups" decided to re-tool "Funny Face" and
capitalize on the publicity Sandy Duncan got because of the operation
which caused her series to be aborted.
The show was retitled The Sandy Duncan
Show, the entire cast (except Sandy) was jettisoned and replaced, the
format changed and the series moved to Sunday nights -- where it bombed
and was subsequently canceled. "Funny Face" was a fresh and
funny series and Sandy Duncan should have returned to TV in that program.
She rebounded, though, winning an Emmy in her tour-de-force role in the
mini-series, Roots, and was great in The
Hogan Family.
