Maude was another gem of a show created by Norman Lear, who also brought us the incomparable All In The Family. Maude centered around a middle-aged woman with the same name, her husband Walter, and their adult daughter, played by Arienne Barbeau. Maude was a liberated women, and an out-spoken liberal-basically a counter-point to the conservative, bigoted Archie Bunker on All In The Family.

As with the other Norman Lear sitcoms, Maude covered some ground-breaking subjects for network television, such as abortion, women's lib, and other relevant socio-political issues of the day. Being an out-spoken liberal and an assertive women, Maude was very in touch with the times. She always automatically sided with the underdog, and this made her often hard to take for her quiet, neutral spouse, Walter.

Maude's clashes with those around her regarding political issues were played for laughs. But on occasion, the series had serious shadings. Actress Bea Arthur played Maude with conviction, but without being excessively strident. Maude was a show that was very much a product of its era and has not aged well.

My favorite was the episode where Maude and Vivian had to retrieve Arthur's first wife's brooch off of their friend Hattie who was lying in state in her casket. --Anonymous
