Police StoryBy Scott Schaeffer
"Police Story" was a change-of-pace cop show that premiered
in 1973 amid other mediocre offerings on television. It was an anthology
series with no regular cast and only rarely recurring characters.
The series was created by Joseph Wambaugh, the best-selling author of
"The New Centurions", "The Blue Knight" (made into an
Emmy-winning mini-series in 1973), and "The Onion Field."
Wambaugh also served as a Los Angeles police officer/detective sergeant
from 1959 to 1973.
In trying to keep the show as realistic as possible, car chases and
shoot-outs were almost non-existent. The main thrust was to present police
work as the stressful, thankless, difficult but sometimes rewarding job
that it is in an urban environment. The officers portrayed dealt with
divorce, alcoholism, brutality, corruption and many other topics
previously not shown on many police-based series.
Using the anthology premise also allowed the series to present patrol
officers, detectives, and undercover personnel in various types of
situations. Among the many guest stars were familiar faces from other
Super70s TV series: Robert Culp, Robert Forster, Chad Everett, Mike
Connors, Martin Milner, Robert Stack, and Don Meredith.
"Police Story" ran for four seasons on NBC from 1973 to 1977.
There were also two spin-offs from characters that originated from
one-time appearances on the show - "Joe
Forrester" starring Lloyd Bridges and the popular "Police
Woman" starring Angie Dickinson.

My favorite episode of Police story was the one where Robert Forster played the divorced cop who was busy on a case of a missing little boy, and was also struggling with his relationship with his estranged family. --Anonymous | Note: This is just a random sample of the Police Story messages in our TV forums!
