Police Woman
Forty-three year old Angie Dickinson starred as Sgt. Suzanne 'Pepper'
Anderson in Police Woman. If you do not remember this show, you
might be surprised to learn that she was one of the sexiest females on
television at the time. Not only that, her character was smart and sassy
as well. This series was one of the first to showcase a female lead in a
cop show (Get Christie Love & Amy
Prentiss also debuted in the Fall of 1974), and it set the stage for
other similar shows to follow in its wake, such as Charlie's
Angel's.
It came along on network TV just as women's roles in real life were
changing rapidly in the workplace, and especially, police forces
nationwide. I, like many I knew, thought that Angie was a great role-model
for girls who wanted a career in law enforcement when they grew-up. The
show had plenty of action without being too violent, and Angie was perfect
for the role.

One episode of "Police Woman" that was indeed ahead of it's time...way ahead...was the episode where Pepper puts her job and her reputaion on the line for another former policewoman that is about to be outed for being a lesbian. This aired in 1976 or 1977 and would be interesting to see how it manages to compare to todays depiction of gays and lesbians in television.
Another episode that I found to be ineteresting was the episode titled "Blind Terror." Pepper goes undercover as a blind woman.
