Ellery QueenBy Patrick Mondout
NBC rehashed the Ellery Queen stories for a mystery series in
the Fall of 1975. The series starred Jim Hutton as Ellery Queen, and David
Wayne as his father, Inspector Richard Queen. It was set in late 1940s New
York.
One quirk of this show was the way Hutton (father of Timothy Hutton)
asked just before the final commercial, "Have you figured it out? Do
you know who the murderer is?" When we returned from the icebox,
Ellery would have the suspects assembled in a room and would reveal all.
Previous television series' based on the stories include The
Adventures of Ellery Queen, which ran from October of 1950 to 1952 on
the long-forgotten Dumont network and later ABC, and another show on NBC
of the same name which ran from September of 1958 to August of 1959. Like
the latter, Jim Hutton's 'Queen lasted just a single season.
