Rowan and Martin's Laugh-InBy Persona Non Grata
First seen as a special September 9, 1967, this innovative, trend
setting new comedy show was an instant success and the top-rated TV show
for its first two seasons. Its humor was based on its lightning-fast pace,
sight gags, catch phrases ("You bet your bippy," "Here come
de judge," "Beautiful downtown Burbank," "Sock it to
me") and repeating routines. Some favorites were:
- Lily Tomlin as the nasal voiced telephone operator with a snorting
laugh.
- Arte Johnson as the German soldier seen peering from behind a plant
saying, "Verrrry interesting."
- Ruth Buzzi as a crotchety old lady with a hairnet and baggy
stockings who whacked an equally derelict old man with her umbrella
when he sat down beside her on a park bench.
- Goldie Hawn as a ditzy, giggling blonde.
- Richard Nixon in a surprise appearance saying, "Sock it to
me."

I am in love with Henry Gibson! I enjoy Laugh-in because of its political humor, and how it reflected society in the 60's. I was not born until 3 years after the show ended (I'm only 25), but the thing I love best about Laugh-In is Henry Gibson. The show just was not the same for me after he left. Mr. Gibson, I love you! --Corrina | Note: This is just a random sample of the Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In messages in our TV forums!
